MARY CARY "Frequently Martha" tells the story of Mary in first person, a precocious twelve-year old who recounts her experiences as a young child living in an orphanage since losing both parents. As for Martha, she is Mary's spunky "other self" who speaks out and sometimes acts out, in spite of Mary's better nature. Readers have likened the story to Pollyanna or the Little Princess--including the happy ending.

The 168-page cloth-bound hard cover book front was designed by Frances Rogers and features cement gray gateposts and red brick wall and a red orphanage on the top border. The book is in good condition and shows average use for a book its age. Slightly edge worn, foxing, and minimal loosening of the binding.

Although not a library book, a make-shift library pocket is taped inside the back cover, along with a handmade borrowing card. A reminder that collecting old books is more than the words written inside, but possess stories of those who read them.

About the Author: Kate Langley Bosher was a native of Virginia born in 1865 and a popular novelist. She was a suffragist and founding member and officer of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia. Mary Cary was the most popular of her writings, selling over 100,000 copies within a year of release. It was the only one of Bosher's novels to have a film adaptation.
