Low stock: 1 left
A rare and historically rich collection of over 100 photographs, circa 1920s from China's Szechwan Province, documenting the cultural impact of early 20th century medical missionaries to China
Preserved in a scrapbook compiled by Viola L. Miller, these photographs offer an intimate look at the daily life of missionaries treating patients at the William Gamble Memorial Women's Hospital in Chungking, China. Gamble Hospital was more than just a hospital; it was established with a focus on education and training and provided a specialized program for women in midwifery, leading to the graduation of its first group of nurses in 1924.
The collection includes photographs of graduating medical students, patients, regional scenery, children, and weddings. Most photographs are carefully dated and labeled, providing a historical record of the period and the photographs and scrapbook in excellent condition.
