This GLASS FIRE GRENADE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE has a globular shape and was likely made in England around 1900. It features a deep emerald green glass with a pleated or vertical rib pattern that extends around the entire grenade, and has a few tiny bubbles. The piece was mold blown with ghost seams, a smooth bottom, and an applied mouth ring.
It stands at a height of 5 ⅜" and has no chips or cracks. A similar fire grenade can be found on the Peachridge Glass website in a deep blue color. Live Auctioneers shows one in amber glass.
About Glass Grenades & Extinguishers: Prior to the modern metal fire extinguisher, globe-shaped glass fire grenades were commonly used in homes, hotels, factories, schools, and commercial buildings. These grenades were designed to be thrown at the base of a fire and were filled with a combination of saltwater, bicarbonate of soda, and muriate of ammonia. They became popular in the United States in the 1870s when the first patents were granted, but by 1910, had been replaced by the more advanced fire extinguisher that we know today.
