The Staffordshire Style COUPLE IN THE GARDEN Pottery Figurine exudes charm and romance. A young man and a girl sit underneath an arch of boughs, with the man in a round hat adorned with a feather plume and wearing a deep blue jersey, white and gold striped breeches, and lavender stockings. The girl's auburn hair cascades down her back as she wears a white garden dress with delicate red flowers and green leaves, and a deep blue cape. The boy has his right arm around his lover's shoulder.
Adding to the whimsical element, the flowers on the arbor are created using the unique "spaghetti art" technique.
While the figurine may be often seen attributed to Romeo and Juliet, according to P. Gordon, an expert in Staffordshire portrait figures, as of 1987, the piece had not been positively identified and is more similar to the couple, "Lorenzo and Jessica" from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.
Colorful details are displayed throughout the piece, with a flat but fully glazed and painted back. Mold hole on the base. Measuring 9" high and 6 ½" wide, the figure may have a few small imperfections where the glaze was missed. This figurine, while possibly a 20th century reproduction, would be a valuable addition to any theatrical figurine collection, particularly for fans of the Victorian folk art movement.
