This rare antique White Cloud cigar box dates to the early 1900s and was produced by cigar manufacturer William H. St. Clair of Batesville, Indiana (listed in the 1905 Bureau of Statistics Register).
Unique style for a cigar box--designed as a book-shaped box, it opens like a volume and features a colorful lithograph illustration: a gold prospector with pickaxe, an Art Nouveau–styled woman holding a crown, and prospectors panning for gold along a riverbed. Though partially obscured by the binding, the title appears to read “Prospector Go Westward.”
The back shows traces of the original paper label, with legible text reading: “Smoke the White Cloud Cigar” along with St. Clair’s name and town of origin, Batesville, Indiana. The factory mark “No. 145 8th DIS. IND. 5” is stamped in bold black ink. Inside, the box retains its paper lining and a vibrant Flor Fina “Cigarros Esquistos” label, which remains in excellent condition.
