Born in 1885, Shelton Brooks was an accomplished African American composer of popular music and jazz, recognized for his ragtime and vaudeville style. He composed iconic hits of the early 20th century, including JEAN.

Published by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder in 1919, JEAN was among Brooks' popular successes. The orange, white and gray cover illustration, signed FSM, illustrates a woman in 1910's summer fashion reaching for a flower on a trellis in front of a pool with lilies.

The six-page music for piano and voice is in excellent condition other than the previous owner's name written in pencil on the cover. Collectors can enjoy it securely encased in a protective sleeve.
