This original sheet music for Irving Berlin's GOD BLESS AMERICA was published by Irving Berlin Music Publishers in 1939. A few months prior to its release, singer Kate Smith debuted the song on her radio show, to commemorate Armistice Day, now known as Veteran's Day.
Berlin, born Israel Beilin (1888 - 1989), was an iconic American composer and arranger who wrote over 1,500 songs and musical scores. Berling had penned a rendition of GOD BLESS AMERICA twenty years earlier for the World War I musical, Yip, Yip, Yaphank. This song was ultimately not included, yet following a journey to London in 1938, Berling was inspired to compose a piece which expressed his adoration of America due to the events unfolding during Chamberlain’s visit to Hitler and the start of the Munich pact.
