This elegant French chamber candlestick, crafted in the Rococo or Late Baroque style, showcases the elegant DÉCOR STRAUSBOURG motif and boasts a beautiful floral pattern. Designed by Henri Chaumeil (1877-1944) for the "fait-main" or handmade series, the antique dates back to the late 1800s or early 1920s and showcases the unique Strasbourg faience technique, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this art form.

The scrolling curves design is intricately ornamental, featuring a scalloped sconce rim adorned with a "combed" pattern. The capital and shoulder are decorated with reddish pink flowers and bright green leaves, while the scalloped base boasts a raised shell and filagree design. The tip of the handle, which connects to the capital, is reminiscent of an open fish or dragon mouth.

The base bears clear markings of "DÉCOR STRAUSBOURG FAIT MAIN" and Henri Chaumeil's iconic artist signature, CH. This antique chamber candlestick is in very good condition but in need of cleaning, with only minor damage in the form of a small chip on the rim and two fleabite sized chips on the handle. The price reflects condition. The dimensions of this item are approximately 5 ⅛” in width at the base and 3 ¾” in height.

About Henri Chaumeil: Born in Paris in 1877, Henri honed his craft under the tutelage of his father Alcide at their family factory. He went on to further his education at l'Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and eventually showcased his talents at prestigious events such as the Salon des Artistes Independants, the Salon d'Automne, and the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs. In partnership with his son Paul (1902-1984), Henri became renowned for their ornamental and utilitarian china work, specifically in their "petit feu" ceramics.
