This cobalt blue stoneware salt glazed Father Christmas figure is a stunning creation by ELDRETH POTTERY, located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Santa carries a toy bag and holds a star above his head in the classic Father Christmas style. The coat, shoes, and gloves feature hand painted highlights with a sponge technique used for the toy bag.
This Father Christmas figure stands at 10 ½" height and measures 4 ½ inches in width. It bears the Eldreth signature and is dated 1990 on its base. The piece is in pristine condition, with no signs of chips or cracks.
About Eldreth Pottery: Based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania until its closure in 2017, Eldreth was renowned for its expertly crafted salt glaze pottery using traditional techniques. The pottery pieces were created through a combination of wheel turning, slip casting, and hand building, with decorative designs applied by hand using methods such as slip trailing, brushing, and sgrafitto carving. Salt was introduced into the kiln and pieces baked above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in a sodium vapor that adhered to the clay and formed a distinctive glass coating. This natural process ensures that each piece is one-of-a-kind.
