The "Images of America" series published by Arcadia Publishing, celebrates the history and heritage of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across America. The two-part illustrated set,"Kankakee: 1853–1910" published in 2004 and "Kankakee: 1911–1953" published in 2005, both written by Norman Stevens are part of that series.

Author Stevens collected and archived hundreds of historical photographs for the two books and uses them to paint a human face on the community over a span of 100 years. Historical photographs and stories, highlight and remember politicians, businesspeople, soldiers, pleasure seekers, and housewives—the ordinary men and women who lived and worked in this community south of Chicago.

The books are paperback and measure 6 ½” x 9¼” and are signed / inscribed by the author, dated October 20, 2006.

About the Author:

Norman Stevens spent more than 30 years in the field of museum management and teaching history. While executive director of the Kankakee County Museum, he collected and published a number of books of Kankakee photographs through the Arcadia Publishing series.

Stevens also authored Antietam 1862: The Civil War's Bloodiest Day and was a noted expert on the antebellum period and the Civil War. Prior to his death in 2013, he served at the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where he oversaw the restoration of a Sherman tank.
