THE READER an Illustrated Monthly Magazine was an American literature magazine published in the early 20th century by the Bobbs-Merrill Company of Indianapolis and a must have for American literature enthusiasts. 

Established in November 1902, THE READER rapidly rose to prominence in the American magazine industry as a 25-cent monthly journal. In its early years, the magazine was subtitled as "an Illustrated Monthly Magazine" and focused primarily on fiction and poetry. In 1908, THE READER merged with Putnam's Magazine and expanded its coverage to include current events and public affairs.

The magazine contains 172 pages, with 58 dedicated to advertisements, several of which are full-page. Scattered throughout the publication are lovely illustrations, including those by Worth Brehm, Alice Barber Stephens, and Ethel Franklin Betts who illustrated Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess.

The journal's pages may bear the expected results of age, such as foxing, damp staining, tear on front cover, and chipping to the paper cover ends, yet the binding remains strong and all pages are still intact.
