🐦 Expanded & Revised 1983 Edition — A Classic Bird Guide Updated for the Field

🌿A separate listing for the 1966 first edition of Birds of North America is also available.
Collector’s Note

Golden Field Guides introduced millions of readers to nature study through clear writing and richly illustrated plates.

While the 1983 revised edition is favored by birders for its practical field use — updated taxonomy and improved illustrations, collectors may prefer the earlier 1966 first edition for its original illustration plates and rarity.

This 1983 edition of Birds of North America: A Guide to Field Identification reflects the evolution of bird study in the late 20th century—updating one of the most widely used field guides for a new generation of birders.

Retaining the accessible format of the original Golden Guide, this edition incorporates revised species names, updated classification, and expanded content across 360 pages, making it especially practical for real-world identification.

The illustrations by Arthur B. Singer—already iconic in earlier editions—were refined for improved color and clarity, enhancing their usefulness in distinguishing subtle field marks.

About the Creators

Chandler S. Robbins, Bertel Bruun, and Herbert S. Zim combined scientific expertise with a talent for public education, helping make bird identification accessible to a broad audience.

Arthur B. Singer, the illustrator, brought exceptional precision and lifelike detail to the guide. His artwork set a lasting standard for field identification, capturing subtle markings and coloration essential for recognizing species in the field.

Softcover in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean interior pages. Light wear consistent with use, including minor edge wear and handling to the covers. A clean, highly usable field copy.
