🐦 1966 Golden Field Guide — Classic Bird Identification with Iconic Illustrations

🌿A separate listing for the 1983 expanded and revised edition of Birds of North America is also available.
Collector’s Note

Golden Field Guides introduced generations to birding through clear, approachable design and richly detailed illustrations. Early editions featuring Arthur Singer’s artwork remain especially beloved for their clarity and nostalgic appeal.

While the 1966 first edition may be preferred by collectors for its original illustration plates and rarity, active birders may prefer the later 1983 edition for its practical field use — updated taxonomy and improved illustrations.

Published in 1966 by Golden Press, Birds of North America: A Guide to Field Identification is one of the most recognizable and widely used bird guides of the 20th century. The cover artwork—featuring vividly colored songbirds perched among green foliage—is instantly recognizable and reflects the approachable, educational tone that defined the Golden Guide series.Ā

Designed for accessibility without sacrificing scientific accuracy, this guide presents approximately 700 bird species across 340 pages, combining detailed color illustrations and concise identification notes—making it an essential companion for both beginners and experienced birders.Ā

About the Creators

Chandler S. Robbins, Bertel Bruun, and Herbert S. Zim combined scientific expertise with a talent for public education, helping make bird identification accessible to a broad audience. Robbins’ work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and his role in developing the North American Breeding Bird Survey were especially influential.

Arthur B. Singer, the illustrator, brought exceptional precision and lifelike detail to the guide. His artwork set a lasting standard for field identification, capturing subtle markings and coloration essential for recognizing species in the field.

Softcover in very good condition with a tight binding. The primary sign of age is darkening to the front cover, consistent with handling and light exposure and some foxing to interior pages. Overall, a well-preserved and highly usable example.
