Excerpts from The Yankee Church Supper Cookbook

A charming 1980 excerpt cookbook celebrating classic New England church supper recipes.

Collector’s Note

Cookbooks inspired by traditional church suppers hold a special place in American culinary history. These recipe collections capture the communal spirit of parish kitchens and regional gatherings where favorite family dishes were shared, preserved, and passed down through generations.

Yankee’s Main Dish Church Supper Cookbook is a compact vintage recipe collection published in 1980 by Yankee Books. The booklet was created from excerpts of the popular, The Yankee Church Supper Cookbook, a well-known compilation celebrating the hearty dishes served at community church suppers throughout New England.

The 64-page softcover cookbook contains over 100 kitchen-tested recipes reflecting the comforting foods traditionally prepared for parish gatherings, potlucks, and community dinners. Recipes featured include classic favorites such as Red Flannel Hash, Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Pie and Chicken à la King. Many recipes in the original collection were contributed by church and parish members across the eastern United States.

The cover artwork features a needlework illustration of a classic white steepled church, designed by Bob Johnson and based on needlework art by Jean MacLeod, reinforcing the nostalgic New England theme. The 8 ¼" × 5 ¼" booklet is in very good vintage condition with clean pages and no tears.

Framing Appeal

The charming cover illustration of a traditional white New England church framed against a blue sky makes this cookbook particularly appealing for display. The simple Americana design and nostalgic subject matter lend well to framing as decorative kitchen or farmhouse-style wall art.
