Vintage Wedgwood Bacchus Red Dinnerware – English Charm with Everyday Appeal

Collector’s Note

Wedgwood’s Bacchus Red pattern is valued for its cheerful grapevine design and enduring English country appeal. Produced in the mid-20th century, these Queens Ware pieces combine practical durability with decorative charm. Their versatility—equally at home on the table or in display—makes them a favorite among both collectors and everyday users.

A charming example of mid-20th century English tableware, this Wedgwood Bacchus Red dinnerware features a lively grapevine border of red clusters and trailing green leaves, set against a softly fluted creamware body.

Produced in Wedgwood’s signature Queens Ware, these pieces offer a beautiful balance of durability and classic design. Available are rimmed soup bowls and a chop plate / platter, each sold individually.

Rimmed Soup Bowl

  • Hand-painted mark (AMH9773 7) and embossed mold number on back; 8 ¼" diameter x 1 ¼" deep

Large Chop Plate

Decorating Appeal

With its lively grapevine border and softly fluted rim, Bacchus Red brings a fresh English country feel to the table or display. The pattern pairs beautifully with white ironstone, farmhouse textures, and seasonal tablescapes—especially for harvest or wine-inspired settings. Use the chop plate as a centerpiece or wall display, and layer the bowls for everyday charm with a collected look.

The pattern’s crisp white ground and gently scalloped rim provide an elegant frame for the Bacchus motif—long associated with abundance and hospitality—making these pieces equally suited for everyday dining or seasonal entertaining.

Both pieces are in very good condition, free from chips and cracks.  Due to age, there may be imperfections from use. Base stamped “WEDGWOOD ETRURIA & BARLASTON – Made in England.” The absence of the registered trademark symbol ® above the Wedgwood name dates the dinnerware to 1940–1974.

Historical Note

Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, the Wedgwood manufactory quickly became a defining force in European ceramics. His development of creamware, basalt, and the signature jasperware helped establish Wedgwood as both a technical pioneer and a leader in neoclassical taste. By the late 18th century, the firm’s ceramics were favored by royalty and exported throughout Europe and the Americas.

Across the 19th and early 20th centuries, Wedgwood balanced industrial efficiency with hand‑finished artistry, producing wares known for clean lines, durable bodies, and consistent quality. Whether neoclassical reliefs or later transfer‑printed patterns, Wedgwood pieces remain touchstones of craftsmanship—objects that continue to resonate with collectors of ironstone, faïence, and decorative arts.
