A charming complete dozen of vintage Shiny Brite miniature glass Christmas ornaments, made in the USA by Max Eckardt & Sons and preserved in their wonderfully graphic original box.
Dating to approximately the 1950s, this set contains twelve diminutive 1-inch glass ornaments in jewel-like shades of blue and gold. Their tiny scale was deliberately marketed for much more than the Christmas tree: the original package recommends them for decorating Christmas packages, table trees, centerpieces, boutonnieres and sprays—a wonderful glimpse into mid-century holiday decorating.
The ornaments are described directly on the box as “American Made Miniature Ornaments” and “Conical Ornaments — Patent Pending.” Eight are blue-toned and four are gold-toned, with variations in color and silvering that have developed over decades.
Shiny Brite was the trademark associated with Max Eckardt's American ornament business, which worked with Corning to produce machine-made glass Christmas ornaments domestically. American manufacture became an important part of Shiny Brite's identity, particularly as European ornament supplies were disrupted around World War II.
The original green-and-cream window box survives in particularly appealing condition and is marked Max Eckardt & Sons Inc., 1107 Broadway, New York. Stylized Christmas trees frame the cellophane window, while bold period lettering announces “SHINY BRITE,” “AMERICAN MADE,” and “Glass Tree Ornaments.”
For the vintage Christmas collector, the surviving original package is an important part of this set's appeal.

Shiny Brite ornaments have become icons of the American mid-century Christmas. This miniature boxed dozen is especially appealing for its original packaging, tiny 1-inch scale and the wonderfully specific decorating suggestions printed on the box. Rather than limiting the ornaments to a Christmas tree, Max Eckard & Sons promoted them for packages, table trees, centerpieces, boutonnieres and sprays—an evocative glimpse of postwar holiday entertaining and decorating.
Why Collect Shiny Brite?
Shiny Brite occupies an important place in American Christmas history. Max Eckardt established the brand after recognizing the vulnerability of America's reliance on imported European glass ornaments and worked with Corning to develop domestically produced glass ornaments. During the 1940s and 1950s, Shiny Brite became one of America's best-known Christmas ornament names.
Today collectors seek Shiny Brite for its brilliant colors, fragile glass construction, distinctive packaging and enormous variety of sizes and designs. Original boxes are especially desirable because their graphics, manufacturer information and advertising language help document how the ornaments were originally sold.
Condition: All 12 miniature glass ornaments are present and appear intact, with no broken glass observed. Several retain their original metal caps/hangers; others are missing caps or hanging hardware.
The ornaments exhibit varying degrees of age-related oxidation, spotting, fading and loss to the original silvered/color finish, ranging from relatively bright examples to ornaments with more pronounced surface deterioration. This wear is clearly visible in the photographs and is consistent with their vintage age.
The original Shiny Brite cardboard display box is in good to very good vintage condition, particularly considering its age. The green-and-cream graphics remain strong and legible, the cardboard insert remains present, and the transparent window survives. There is expected edge, corner and storage wear.

Display Appeal: Tiny Ornaments with Big Mid-Century Appeal
Shiny Brite used the original box to market the ornaments for multiple uses--providing terrific decorating ideas. At only about 1 inch, these ornaments would be especially attractive on a tabletop feather tree, miniature Christmas tree or small aluminum tree. They could also be arranged in a vintage compote, incorporated into a Christmas centerpiece, or displayed right in their original Shiny Brite box.
