A beautifully sculptural Van Briggle art pottery vase featuring raised poppy decoration and finished in a deep mulberry and blue matte glaze. The soft, velvety surface and organic form exemplify the Arts & Crafts spirit that made Van Briggle one of America’s most celebrated art pottery studios.
This compact cabinet-size vase showcases Van Briggle’s signature relief modeling, with a raised poppy motif flowing organically around the body. The mulberry ground blends softly into subtle blue undertones, creating depth and movement across the matte glaze.
The underside is incised with the classic double-A Van Briggle cipher (Artus & Anne) along with Van Briggle Colo. Spgs., consistent with early–mid 20th-century production. No mold or date numbers are present.
The incised script style — particularly the capital “V” and looping lower-case letters — closely resembles known earlier Van Briggle marks. Comparable etched signatures are documented from the 1910s through 1930s–40s, placing this piece comfortably within that traditional production period. A possible cobalt ink glazer’s mark is also visible.
The vase, ideal for shelf or cabinet display is 5" high and in excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or repairs, and matte glaze beautifully preserved. A wonderful addition for collectors of American art pottery, Arts & Crafts décor, or Van Briggle studio pieces.
🌿 Collector’s Note: Van Briggle matte glazes are among the most recognizable in American art pottery. Developed in the early 1900s, these velvety finishes revived lost European techniques and helped define the Arts & Crafts movement in the United States. Art judges proclaimed the Artes' glaze techniques as "a supreme discovery in modern ceramics." Early incised marks and hand-etched signatures like this example are especially desirable to collectors.
