Antique 1889 The Interwoven Gospels — Victorian Biblical Harmony by Rev. William Pittenger
An 1889 first edition of The Interwoven Gospels: The Four Histories of Jesus Christ Blended into a Complete and Continuous Narrative in the Words of the Gospels, compiled by Rev. William Pittenger and published in New York by John B. Alden.
Created during the late Victorian era of American biblical scholarship, this unusual theological study sought to harmonize the four New Testament Gospel accounts into a single continuous narrative using only the text of the Gospels themselves. Prepared according to the Revised Version of 1881 with readings preferred by the American Committee of Revision, the volume reflects the growing 19th-century interest in comparative Gospel study, devotional reading, and organized biblical chronology.
Bound in its original black cloth boards with gilt lettering to the front cover and spine. Condition is good to very good antique condition. Binding remains solid and intact with moderate rubbing and edge wear, including light fraying at the spine ends and corners consistent with age and handling. Pages show scattered foxing and age toning throughout. Former owner’s inscription in blue ink on the front endpaper. No dust jacket as issued. No highlighting, underlining, or later annotations noted.
Victorian-era “Gospel harmony” books like The Interwoven Gospels were designed to help readers study the life of Christ as one unified narrative rather than as four separate accounts. Volumes of this type became especially popular among ministers, Bible students, and theological seminaries during the late 19th century as biblical scholarship and comparative scripture study expanded in both America and Europe.
