Early Issues of The Designer Fashion Magazine (1906–1907) Featuring Edwardian Illustrated Covers

Collector’s Note

Early issues of The Designer are sought after by fashion historians, costume designers, and ephemera collectors for their illustrated fashion plates, sewing patterns, and period advertising that document everyday dress and domestic life of the Edwardian era. Even well-worn copies remain valuable research material for studying historic garments, textiles, and the evolution of women’s magazines in the early 20th century.

The Designer was a prominent American women's magazine published monthly by the Standard Fashion Company during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The publication played an important role in spreading fashion trends, sewing patterns, and household advice to a growing audience of home dressmakers and typically included illustrated fashion plates, garment patterns, household articles, and extensive advertising reflecting everyday consumer life of the Edwardian era.

Historical Note

Women's magazines such as The Designer were central to the spread of fashion trends in the early 1900s. Before ready-to-wear clothing became widespread, publications like this provided dress patterns, fabric advice, and style illustrations used by home seamstresses across North America.

Prior to adopting the title The Designer, the publication appeared under several names including The Ladies Standard Magazine, Ladies' Standard Journal, and The Standard Designer. In 1926, it merged with The Delineator, the well-known Butterick fashion magazine.

Three early issues of The Designer fashion magazine (1906–1907) featuring colorful illustrated covers of Edwardian women in garden, travel, and society dress. These issues preserve examples of early 20th-century Edwardian fashion illustration used to communicate dress trends to home seamstresses.

Sold each, these three 8" x 11" issues feature colorful cover illustrations, fashion illustrations, and numerous period advertisements for household goods, beauty products, and packaged foods.  Because of condition issues, these copies are well suited for research, fashion study, scanning, or craft use.
