Collectors of illustrated religious books are drawn to The Bible in Pictures for its ambitious scope and remarkable visual presentation. Published during the golden age of educational and devotional publishing, the volume combines more than one thousand illustrations with simplified biblical narratives intended to make Scripture accessible to readers of all ages.
Unlike many denominational publications of the era, this project was developed with the assistance of scholars representing multiple Christian traditions, including Methodist, Anglican, and Roman Catholic perspectives. The result is a visually rich mid-century interpretation of biblical history that reflects both the educational ideals and ecumenical spirit of the postwar period.
The Bible in Pictures was compiled by Reverend Ralph Kirby and published by Greystone Press, New York, in 1952. Designed to present the major stories of Scripture through a combination of concise narrative text and extensive illustrations, the volume contains more than one thousand images that guide readers through biblical history from Genesis to the early Christian Church.
Using text adapted from the Authorized King James Version, the book was created to help readers visualize biblical events and understand the continuity of the scriptural narrative. The illustrations flow from scene to scene, creating an engaging visual experience that was intended for both family reading and religious education.
The 320-page volume is organized into three major sections:
- The Story of His People
- The Story of Jesus
- The Story of the Church
Most pages contain illustrations, including numerous full-page and color images depicting key events from both the Old and New Testaments.
