Authentic, collectible recipes from Harlem’s Queen of Soul Food and her legendary restaurant.
Collector’s Note
This first edition, first printing of Sylvia Woods’ Family Soul Food Cookbook is prized by collectors as a primary record of Black American and Southern soul food tradition. Woods, known as the “Queen of Soul Food,” built Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem into a cultural landmark; her cookbooks remain trusted sources for the authentic recipes that defined it.
Frst editions are relatively scarce and valued as tangible links to her legacy, the Woods family business, and Harlem’s culinary history. For those who collect significant African American cookbooks or vintage culinary works, this volume offers both authentic recipes and a meaningful piece of cultural heritage.
In Sylvia’s Family Soul Food Cookbook, legendary Harlem restaurateur Sylvia Woods gathers more than 125 soul food classics drawn from her family, her South Carolina community, and the beloved dishes served at Sylvia’s Restaurant, the iconic Harlem institution she founded in 1962. This 1999 first edition / first printing from William Morrow blends personal history, community memory, and deeply rooted culinary tradition into one warm, generous volume.
Sylvia begins by recalling her childhood in Hemingway, South Carolina, where she was raised by her mother and grandmother — the town’s only midwives — in a community that shared work, childcare, and food. When preparing this cookbook, Sylvia returned home to host a community cook‑off at Jeremiah Church, gathering recipes from family and friends of all ages. Those dishes, combined with Woods family favorites, form the heart of this collection.
Inside are the kinds of recipes you’d find at the Woods family table: comforting soups, slow‑simmered meats, fried chicken, greens, cornbread, rice dishes, breads, and desserts that reflect the soul of Southern home cooking. Each recipe carries the spirit of the Woods community — food meant to be shared, celebrated, and passed down.
This cookbook captures the warmth, generosity, and heritage that made Sylvia Woods a national figure in soul food. Her Harlem restaurant became a cultural landmark, and her food line — sold in grocery stores across the country — brought her flavors into millions of homes. Sylvia’s Family Soul Food Cookbook preserves that legacy in its most intimate form.
This copy is a William Morrow first edition / first printing (1999) in excellent condition. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, bright covers; tight binding; crisp pages; no writing noted; minimal shelf wear; appears lightly used, if at all. Dust jacket has a small tear (see last image.)
