Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima — WWII Patriotic Western Swing Release
Issued in 1945 at the close of World War II, this patriotic release by Bob Wills and Cliff Johnson commemorates the American flag raising on Mount Suribachi. A wartime Western Swing artifact blending country music history with one of the most iconic moments of the Pacific campaign.
Published in 1945 by Hill and Range Songs, Inc., Hollywood, Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima captures the surge of patriotic sentiment following the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The cover features a stylized depiction of the American flag raised over Mount Suribachi — one of the defining images of the Pacific Theater — accompanied by an inset Columbia Records studio portrait of Bob Wills. The reverse advertises Spade Cooley’s Song Folio, reinforcing its place within the Western Swing publishing world.
Written by Bob Wills and Cliff Johnson (known professionally as “Cactus Jack”), the song was recorded in 1945 by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. It became Wills’ second No. 1 hit on the Juke Box Folk charts, remaining on the charts for eleven weeks.
Historically notable, this publication also marks Wills’ move from Irving Berlin Music to Hill and Range Songs in 1945 — a publisher known for offering a more favorable royalty split (75/25) to writers. Hill and Range would go on to become a dominant force in country music publishing by the 1950s
Excellent vintage condition. Clean, bright, and well preserved. Protective sleeve included.
The bold red and blue wartime graphics and Mount Suribachi imagery make this a striking display piece. Matted in cream and framed in dark wood, it pairs well with Western memorabilia, WWII collections, or Americana-themed interiors.
