Masterfully Painted Limoges Game Bird — Signed Coudert in Rich, Luminous Color
Collector’s Note
Signed Limoges plates from the early 20th century—particularly those featuring finely rendered game birds—are highly sought after for their artistry and craftsmanship. Decorators such as L. Coudert are especially respected, with signed examples prized for their painterly detail, rich coloration, and association with the finest Limoges decorating studios. Plates from Borgfeldt’s Coronet line represent a high standard of production, blending studio artistry with export-quality porcelain.
A striking hand-painted Limoges porcelain charger from the Magnificent Game Bird Portrait Plates series, decorated for George Borgfeldt’s Coronet line and signed by noted Limoges artist L. Coudert.
The composition centers on a beautifully rendered pheasant, poised within a softly blended landscape of peach, gold, and green tones. Delicate grasses rise behind the bird, while the subtle gradation of color and light creates depth and movement—hallmarks of fine Limoges studio decoration.
Borgfeldt’s Paris decorating studios frequently employed the mixtion technique, combining printed groundwork with extensive hand painting. This method, considered among the highest standards of the period, results in a surface that is both richly detailed and luminous, with each brushstroke enhancing the underlying composition.
The 10″ plate features an elegant scalloped rim, raised molded border, and hand-applied gold gilt edge. The artist’s signature, “L. Coudert,” appears on the face, while the reverse bears the Coronet / George Borgfeldt Limoges backstamp. The foot has been professionally drilled for wall display, making it ready to hang.
Condition is excellent, near mint antique condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is only light, honest wear to the gilt at the rim, consistent with age. Please review all photographs for details.
