A vintage recipe booklet celebrating Maine seafood and coastal cooking traditions.

Collector’s Note

Regional seafood pamphlets were commonly produced by state agencies and tourism offices to promote local fisheries and coastal cuisine. Publications such as this one from Maine highlight the importance of lobster, clams, and Atlantic fish to the state's economy while sharing traditional preparation methods with visitors and home cooks. Today these small pamphlets are collected for their culinary history, regional identity, and nostalgic mid-century food photography.

Seafood Dishes from Maine is a four-panel fold-out recipe pamphlet published in 1976 by the Maine Department of Sea and Shore Fisheries to promote the state’s seafood industry.

The booklet contains twelve traditional seafood recipes featuring classic New England ingredients and cooking techniques. Recipes include Maine Clam Chowder, Baked Maine Ocean Perch, Baked Turbot, Broiled Mackerel with Mustard Paste, Baked Maine Lobster De Luxe, and Boiled State of Maine Lobster. The 8 ¼" × 5 ¼" pamphlet is in very good vintage condition with no tears and minimal signs of use.

The cover features a striking photograph of a rich, cream-based shrimp entrée—depicted more like a classic seafood velouté than a traditional chowder. The dish served in a mid‑century yellow enamel chafing-dish is placed before a snowy Maine window and accompanied by a pewter cream pitcher and antique wooden spice box. The cozy winter setting reflects the state's coastal culinary identity and would make a charming decorative image when framed. Although the featured shrimp dish is not included among the recipes, the photograph captures the mid-century visual style used in tourism and food promotion materials of the era.

Historical Note

During the mid-20th century, Maine actively promoted its seafood industry through recipe pamphlets distributed by tourism offices and state agencies. Lobster, clams, and Atlantic fish were central to both the local economy and the state's culinary identity. Publications like this one helped introduce visitors and home cooks to traditional New England seafood preparation while reinforcing Maine’s reputation as one of America’s premier coastal food regions.

Just a quick heads‑up: the photos reveal details far better than text alone, so they’re worth a close review.
