19th Century Rockingham Ribbed Serving Bowls with Scalloped Forms – Choice

Collector’s Note

Rockingham pottery became a staple of 19th-century American kitchens, prized for its durability and distinctive mottled brown glaze often compared to tortoiseshell. Produced roughly between 1840 and 1900, these wares were both practical and visually appealing, with forms ranging from simple utilitarian vessels to more sculptural designs. Today, collectors value pieces with strong glaze variation and well-defined forms.

A beautiful pairing of 19th-century Rockingham pottery serving bowls, each featuring a ribbed body and softly scalloped rim—forms that combine everyday utility with strong decorative appeal.

Both examples are finished in warm, mottled tortoiseshell glazes, ranging from butterscotch caramel to deeper brown tones. The glaze is applied in a random, spattered manner, creating organic variation that enhances the vertical ribbing and gives each bowl a unique surface character. Sold separately. Small Ribbed Bowl with Scalloped Rim – Dark Rockingham Glaze

  • Approx. 6 ½” diameter × 2 ½” high
  • Narrow ribbing (approx. ¾”–1”)
  • Heavier glaze application with deeper brown tones
  • Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing. Clean, well-preserved example.

Large Ribbed Serving Bowl – Butterscotch Caramel Glaze

  • Approx. 9 ½” diameter × 3 ⅛”–3 ¼” high
  • Wide, irregular ribbing (approx. 1”–1 ½”)
  • Light, random glaze application in warm caramel tones
  • Very good antique condition. Scattered glaze bubbles/blisters of varying sizes. One interior blister has opened slightly, resembling a chip but is a glaze flaw.
  • Minor variation in height from firing gives the bowl a slightly uneven rim—typical of the period.

Ribbed bowls like these were essential working pieces in early kitchens, yet sculptural quality and rich coloration make them equally suited for modern display.
