1944 “Christmas Candles” with Striking Red Mid-Century Holiday Cover

Collector’s Note

Wartime Christmas sheet music carries unique cultural resonance. In the early 1940s, holiday songs often blended faith, family imagery, and patriotic optimism — making these pieces especially meaningful to collectors of WWII-era Americana and seasonal ephemera.

Glowing against a rich crimson backdrop, this 1944 edition of Christmas Candles captures the warmth and reverence of wartime Christmas celebrations. A silhouetted family gathers beside a candle-lit tree — an image both nostalgic and deeply symbolic of hope during the early 1940s.

Composed in 1943 by Raymond Leveen, Leo Breen, and Wilbur Sampson, the song reflects the devotional tone of mid-century holiday music. Published by Leeds Music Corporation of Radio City, New York, this edition represents the era when Christmas sheet music served both as entertainment and spiritual comfort during World War II. The Andrew Sisters later recorded the song in 1949 with Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, further cementing its place in holiday repertoire.

The back cover features Leeds advertising for popular artists of the period, including Bing Crosby, Lawrence Welk, and the Andrew Sisters — a wonderful snapshot of 1940s American music marketing. Measures 9" by 12". Condition is very good with only light corner fraying and age wear. Housed in a protective sleeve.

Framing Appeal

Displaying vintage Christmas sheet music goes beyond nostalgia--it beautifully blends modern festive spaces. This mid-century design displays wonderfully in a frame or in shadow box with twigs, berries and twinkling fairy lights.

Collecting old sheet music invites you into a world where history, art, and melody intertwine. Each piece is more than printed notation—it's a preserved moment in time. For music lovers, history buffs, and creative minds alike, building a collection offers both personal satisfaction and the possibility of uncovering items of real value.

From classical masterpieces to the spirited energy of the Jazz Age, vintage sheet music reflects how music shaped culture across generations. First editions of composers like Chopin or Gershwin are especially coveted, treasured for their historical and monetary worth. As Smithsonian Magazine notes, these artifacts provide a vivid window into America’s musical and cultural evolution.
