Early 20th-Century Parish Life in Print

✨ Collector Offer — 10% off when purchasing both issues (reflected at check-out)

The Parish Monthly offers a rare and detailed window into daily religious, educational, and community life of Catholic parishioners. These multi-page parish magazines document not only church teachings, but the people, events, and rhythms of a growing Catholic community.

This listing offers two volumes of The Parish Monthly from St. Gabriel’s Church in Glendale, Ohio—issued in May 1910 and January 1911, during a significant period in the parish’s history. Printed during the pastorate of Rev. Robert G. Connor—whose name appears on each cover and whose leadership had recently culminated in the completion and dedication of the parish’s new church building in 1907—these issues reflect an important chapter in the life of the parish.

Collector’s Note

Parish publications from the early 20th century are highly valued for their dual role as both religious documents and community records. Often referred to historically as parish calendars or monthly messengers, these publications preserved names of parishioners, school honor rolls, donation records, and local events—making them important resources for genealogists and local historians.

Surviving examples are increasingly scarce, particularly multi-page issues in complete condition, as most were intended for short-term use and later discarded.

Each issue contains 34 pages and is divided into two distinct sections—local parish content including upcoming parish activities, school honor rolls, and monthly offertory collections with named donors and amounts. Local updates are followed with a 32-page diocesan insert with standardized content distributed across all parishes, including feast day narratives, catechism instruction, religious commentary, and children's educational material.

Offered here are two issues, each sold individually.

    Historical Note

St. Gabriel’s Church, founded in 1851, established its first building in 1859, with a school added in 1862. After storm damage in 1880, the parish undertook a long rebuilding effort culminating in the construction of its present church, begun in 1906 and dedicated in 1907.

The new church was financed largely through contributions from local parishioners, reflecting the strength and commitment of the Glendale community. These publications were issued during the early years of the new church, capturing a formative moment in its history.
