O-Hi-O (O-My-O) — Jazz Age Vaudeville Edition Featuring Ziegfeld Performers
Published in 1920 at the dawn of the Jazz Age, “O-Hi-O (O-My-O)” captures the spirit of Tin Pan Alley and Broadway revue culture. The striking cover by Helen Van Doorn Morgan features portraits of prominent vaudeville and Ziegfeld Follies performers, making this edition especially desirable to theatre and popular music collectors.
Original 1920 sheet music for O-Hi-O (O-My-O), music by Abe Olman and lyrics by Jack Yellen, published by Forster Music Publisher, Chicago.
The bold coral and navy cover design centers around a large oval collage of seven studio portraits of well-known performers associated with Broadway revues and vaudeville productions, including:
- Eddie Cantor (Midnight Rounders)
- Ted Lewis (Greenwich Village Follies)
- Van & Schenck (Ziegfeld Follies)
- Holland, Garrison & White (Snapshots of 1921)
- Arthur West (Hippodrome Frolics)
- Al Jackson (Shubert productions)
Illustrated by Helen Van Doorn Morgan, an active Tin Pan Alley cover artist of the 1920s, the composition blends portrait photography with stylized decorative framing and a romantic vignette of a couple beneath a tree.
Inside, this edition (9" x 12") includes a unique verse by Al Jolson referencing President Warren Harding’s inauguration, along with music and lyrics for Siren of a Southern Sea and Kiss a Miss.
Condition is very good. Some edge fraying and detached pages, structurally loose but highly suitable for framing. Archival sleeve included.
This cover includes imagery of Eddie Cantor in blackface performance makeup, a practice common in early 20th-century American vaudeville and minstrel traditions. Such imagery reflects racial stereotypes that are offensive today. This item is presented for historical documentation and educational purposes only, not as an endorsement of the views or practices depicted.
The dramatic navy and coral palette and portrait collage create a striking Jazz Age statement piece. Beautiful matted in ivory or black with a slim dark wood frame — ideal for theatre rooms, music studios, or curated Tin Pan Alley displays.
