Festive 1962 supermarket recipe holiday entertaining pamphlet.

Collector’s Note

Mid-century supermarket recipe pamphlets are a fascinating category of culinary ephemera, created as promotional giveaways to inspire customers to try new recipes and purchase featured ingredients. Holiday-themed editions like this one are especially collectible for their seasonal recipes and nostalgic glimpse into American grocery store marketing during the 1950s and 1960s.

Holiday Recipes from Nancy Carter’s Cookbook was distributed to customers of Albers Grocery / Colonial Stores during the holiday season of 1962.

Produced as part of a series of monthly promotional recipe leaflets, the booklet was authored under the name Nancy Carter, a pseudonym used by the home economics director of Colonial Stores. These pamphlets were designed to provide shoppers with seasonal cooking inspiration while highlighting ingredients available at the store.

The 8-page folded pamphlet contains a variety of twenty-three recipes for punch, cookies, buffet casseroles, salads, vegetables, fruitcakes, meats, and desserts, many using Colonial Stores products.

The cover features a striking green holiday design with silver ornament imagery and a festive candle centerpiece, typical of early-1960s grocery advertising graphics. The 5 ½" × 8 ½" pamphlet remains in very good condition with bright colors and no tears.

Framing Appeal

With its festive green cover, elegant holiday typography, and mid-century food photography, this pamphlet displays beautifully as seasonal décor. Framed open to an interior recipe spread or shown closed as cover art, it would make a charming decorative accent for a vintage kitchen, holiday baking station, or retro Christmas display.

Historical Note

Albers Super Markets was founded in the early 1930s by grocery executive William H. Albers after his departure from the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. The chain expanded throughout the Midwest and South during the early years of supermarket development. Following Albers’ death in 1954, the company was acquired by the Atlanta-based Colonial Stores chain. Promotional recipe pamphlets such as this one were commonly distributed through supermarkets during the mid-20th century as part of in-store marketing and customer loyalty programs.
