Late 19th-Century Brilliance in Classic Pineapple and Fan Early American Pattern Glass

Tall, sparkling, and richly textured, this elegant pedestal flower vase showcases the intricate pressed pattern known as Shepherd’s Plaid, also referred to as Pineapple & Fan. With its dramatic scalloped rim, diamond-cut pineapple body, and radiant fan bursts rising toward the crown, it captures the brilliance and craftsmanship of late 19th-century American pattern glass.

Pattern number 891, Shepherd’s Plaid was introduced by Model Flint Glass Company in 1894. While the similar Pineapple & Fan motif was produced by multiple companies, this version is attributed to Model Flint and is documented by the Early American Pattern Glass Society and in Ron Teal’s Model Flint Glass Company of Albany, Indiana (p. 121). Teal notes the attribution but does not confirm that this exact vase form has been matched with shards from the Albany plant — a detail serious collectors will appreciate.

The tall pedestal form elevates the pattern beautifully, giving the piece both height and presence. The bowl’s deep cut-like texture and the starburst foot create wonderful light refraction from every angle.

The vase measures 9 ¾″ high from base to rim, with the bowl portion alone measuring 5 ½″ high. It is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and displays brilliantly.

⚜️ Collector’s Note: Model Flint operated only briefly; first in Findlay, Ohio (1888 - 1893), and later following tornado damage, in Albany, Indiana (1893 - 1902). Independent operations concluded in 1902 upon consolidation with the National Glass Company. Pieces attributed to Model Flint represent a fascinating window into the competitive and innovative era of American pattern glass at the end of the 19th century.
