Lunéville Opaque French Faïence Strawberry Design Rimmed Soup Bowl

Collector’s Note

Keller & Guérin (K&G Lunéville) fruit plates are prized for their vibrant hand-painted decoration and naturalistic fruit motifs. Strawberry motifs were especially popular in French provincial faïence during the Art Nouveau era, symbolizing abundance and domestic hospitality.

Lunéville produced strawberry patterns in smaller quantities than other fruit plate designs, which is why strawberry-decorated pieces surface less frequently today.

These antique rimmed soup bowls measure approximately 8 ½" in diameter and features a charming strawberry-and-leaf motif in rich red and green tones. The decoration shows the soft haloing effect typical of tin-glazed earthenware, where pigments gently bleed into the glaze during firing—an effect often compared to flow blue.

The underside bears the Lunéville Opaque France backstamp, dating the bowl to the late 19th or early 20th century, along with additional impressed factory marks.

Decorating Appeal

Equally suited for display or use, Lunéville Opaque pottery brings a fresh, colorful elegance to the home. Their strawberry-and-leaf motifs and softly blended backgrounds make them ideal for open shelving, hutches, or wall arrangements.

Grouped together or mixed with ironstone and other French faïence, they add warmth and a collected, European feel—perfect for farmhouse, French country, and provincial-inspired interiors.

Sold and priced individually and are in antique condition, with some light crazing and small kiln or rim nibs consistent with age. See photos for slight differences between the three rimmed soup bowls.

Historical Note

Lunéville faïence is among the most celebrated French ceramics. In 1730, Jacques Chambrette established the factory in Luneville, Lorraine. His innovations—including the development of terre de Lorraine earthenware—helped define the region’s distinctive ceramic identity.

Sébastien Keller acquired the factory in 1785. Around 1832, the firm became known as Keller & Guérin producing both utilitarian wares and finely decorated faïence. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lunéville was widely recognized for its hand-painted designs, including richly colored fruit and floral motifs that remain highly collectible today. Factory production declined following World War II, and Lunéville ultimately ceased production in 1981.
