A GREAT FIND FOR COLLECTORS OF IRONSTONE!
Featuring a lovely antique miniature white ironstone FOOTED COVERED SAUCE TUREEN. The tureen is stamped, "Iron Stone Imported by A De Forest Ann Arbor.
Both the tureen and the lid are covered with an embossed design of Ceres wheat. The handles are designed to look like twisted rope. The small oval shaped tureen measures 7 ¼” in diameter from handle to handle and 4" across. It stands 4" high without the lid and about 6 ¾” tall with the lid. The tureen will hold just under two cups of liquid.
The piece is small but almost too large to be a single serving tureen or a child's toy. Because of its size and the importer stamp, it may have been a salesman sample. The only mark is the A De Forest import stamp. Most likely this piece was sold by Andrew De Forest of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
According to the "History of Earliest Ann Arbor," De Forest owned a grocery, drug and agricultural business in Washtenaw County, Michigan in the mid 1800s. It appears from old city directories, that De Forest shared a retail space with a local drug store, R.W. Ellis & Co. There are also citations in University of Michigan Board of Regents minutes where De Forest sold pails, wash basins, tubs and other items to the college in the 1850s.
The set is in wonderful condition for antique ironstone of this age. There is some light crazing and above one handle near the rim, some browning. Please review the photos carefully. This piece would be a great addition to someone's antique ironstone or tureen collection, as the small tureens are difficult to find.
