Awesome antique FELT FLAG PENNANT from the 1914 INDIANAPOLIS 500. It is a beauty and extremely rare!
This original souvenir from the 1914 Indianapolis 500 is in exceptional condition and would be one of the earliest felt flag pennants from the race, which held its inaugural event in 1911.
The olive green felt flag pennant bordered in rust and red felt is stenciled with an illustration of a race car carrying two drivers. Surrounding the car are the words, 500 · Mile · Auto · Race. The main body of the pennant reads: INDIANAPOLIS 1914. The stencil colors are light red, blue and cream.
The pennant measures 28 ⅛” long, not including the 5 ½” tassels. It is 11” across at the top and 2 ⅛” across at the tip. The pieces of felt are machined stitched together using a zigzag stitch. The top border and tassels are attached with a straight stitch.
The stenciling is intact with very little cracking. There is 3” area in the seam that attaches the border felt to the main pennant felt where the stitching has become loose; however, the piece could be easily repaired/restored. Most likely, a collector would frame the pennant so no restoration may be needed as the loose stitching cannot be seen when the pennant is flat.
There is also some fading on the back and a few pinholes in the tassels, most likely from where it was hung on a wall with thumbtacks. This felt flag pennant is in very good condition commensurate with age. Please reference photos for detail.
Perfect gift for Father's Day, birthday, or anytime gift for your race memorabilia collector or Indy 500 lover! Or as a gift to yourself!
