1937 Devotional Hymn from the Early Sacred Music Era

Collector’s Note

Original sheet music and songbook of hymns and sacred texts from the 1930s are significant for their historical value and their ability to provide a window into the spiritual and cultural life of the post-depression America.

Published in 1937 by G. Schirmer of New York, I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked is a reverent sacred hymn composed by Geoffrey O’Hara with lyrics by Daniel S. Twohig. Reflective and devotional in tone, the piece contemplates the life and path of Christ through poetic imagery and expressive melody.

Geoffrey O’Hara (1882–1967), a Canadian American composer, was widely known for his patriotic, sacred, and popular works, composing over 500 songs during his career. Lyricist Daniel S. Twohig (1883–1959), born in Ireland, contributed to numerous Christian hymns and sacred texts. Together, their collaboration resulted in one of O’Hara’s most enduring devotional compositions.

This edition was published by G. Schirmer, a prestigious American music publisher known for classical and sacred repertoire. The cover features a stately black-ink typographic design framed by an architectural border reminiscent of Gothic tracery, lending it a dignified ecclesiastical presence. The back cover lists additional works by Geoffrey O’Hara.

Measuring 9" by 12", this sheet music is in very good condition, with no tears and only minor splitting beginning at the center fold. Housed in a protective sleeve.

Framing Appeal

Early 20th-century sacred sheet music is appreciated for its refined typography and formal presentation. This example displays beautifully when framed and appeals to collectors of religious ephemera and historic church music.
