Historical highlights, text, and hundreds of old photographs documenting the people and places of Trotwood, Ohio.

Collector’s Note

Local histories become increasingly valuable as photographs disappear, families relocate, and community memories fade. Compiled by the Trotwood-Madison Historical Society, Historic Glimpses of Trotwood Ohio preserves hundreds of photographs, stories, maps, and documents that record the people, businesses, schools, churches, and neighborhoods that shaped one of Montgomery County's most distinctive communities. It is especially desirable to former residents, genealogists, Ohio historians, and collectors of regional Americana.

Historic Glimpses of Trotwood Ohio is a richly illustrated pictorial history of Trotwood, Ohio, compiled and published by the Trotwood-Madison Historical Society.

Originally released in 2006 and represented here by the Second Printing (2008), this substantial 224-page hardcover volume documents the people, places, businesses, industries, schools, churches, and families that contributed to the development of Trotwood and Madison Township.

Drawing upon private collections, family photographs, newspaper archives, historical documents, and community records, the book presents hundreds of historic photographs accompanied by informative text that traces the area's history from prehistoric Native American cultures through the settlement era and into the twentieth century.

Among the many fascinating stories preserved within its pages are the origins of Trotwood's unusual name. Originally known as Higgins Station, the community required a new postal designation when officials discovered another Ohio post office already used the Higgins name. Local merchant Lewis R. Pfoutz reportedly selected the name "Trotwood" after the character Betsy Trotwood from Charles Dickens' David Copperfield. Trotwood remains the only city in the United States bearing that name.

Readers will also discover stories connected to the Iams family homestead, early businesses, transportation, schools, churches, civic organizations, and the individuals whose efforts transformed a frontier settlement into a modern Ohio city.

Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, portraits, maps, and archival images, the volume serves as both an engaging history and an important reference source for researchers and descendants of Trotwood-area families.

Historical Note: Trotwood's Place in Ohio History

The land that became Trotwood was inhabited for centuries by Native American cultures including the Adena, Hopewell, and Fort Ancient peoples. Archaeological evidence of these early civilizations has been discovered throughout Madison Township and nearby Sycamore State Park.

Following Ohio's statehood in 1803, settlers established farms, businesses, churches, and transportation routes that helped transform the area into a thriving community. The village officially became the City of Trotwood in 1971 when its population exceeded 7,000 residents. Today, the Trotwood-Madison Historical Society continues preserving this heritage through publications, exhibits, and stewardship of historic sites such as the Iams House.

Excellent vintage condition. Clean pages, tight binding, and minimal evidence of handling. Historic black-and-white photographs remain crisp and clear throughout. Dust jacket is likewise in excellent condition with no tears observed, showing only minor evidence of a previous fold on the interior flap.
