Henriot Quimper Soleil Yellow Octagonal Faïence Dessert Plate

Collector’s Note

Henriot Quimper faïence is celebrated for its hand-painted Breton figures, with individual plates often depicting either a man or woman in traditional regional dress. Collectors frequently seek to pair these figures, making single examples—like this Breton man—especially desirable as part of a matched set. The less common octagonal form and vibrant “soleil yellow” ground further enhance its appeal, offering a distinctive variation within the long-standing Quimper tradition.

Bright, cheerful, and unmistakably Breton, this hand-painted octagonal dessert plate by Henriot Quimper is a classic example of traditional French faïence. The warm “soleil yellow” tin-glazed ground provides the perfect backdrop for a charming Breton peasant figure at center, framed by lively floral motifs in cobalt blue, green, red, and orange.

The distinctive octagonal form adds visual interest and is especially appealing to collectors, offering a refreshing alternative to standard round Quimper plates. Each brushstroke is applied by hand, resulting in subtle variations in line and color that give the piece its authentic, one-of-a-kind character.

Decorating Appeal

Equally suited for display or use, this Quimper plate add a touch of French country charm to shelves, hutches, wall displays, or breakfast tables. Its cheerful palette and traditional Breton imagery pair beautifully with farmhouse, provincial, and European-inspired interiors.

The mark on the reverse, HENRIOT / QUIMPER / FRANCE / XOX, and painter’s symbol helps date the plate to the interwar period, circa 1922–1942, when decorator marks were commonly used in place of initials. Excellent vintage condition; no chips or cracks; minor glaze variations typical of hand-painting.

Historical Note

Tin-glazed earthenware—known as faïence in France—has been produced in Quimper, Brittany since the late 17th century, when potter Jean-Baptiste Bousquet established one of the region’s first workshops around 1690. By the 19th century, Quimper had become renowned for its hand-painted ceramics.

Over time, several manufacturers shaped the tradition, including HB (Hubaudière-Bousquet) and Henriot. In 1968, these two historic makers were brought together under a single organization, uniting their molds, designs, and decorative styles. Today, Quimper faïence continues to be produced with the same hand-painted craftsmanship.
