Hand-Painted Breton Charm — A Classic Henriot Quimper Faïence Set (c. 1968–1983)

Collector’s Note

Henriot Quimper faïence has long been celebrated for its hand-painted Breton figures and lively folk motifs, with roots dating back to the 17th century. Flat cups with distinctive squared handles are less commonly encountered than traditional forms, making examples like this especially appealing to collectors of French faïence and regional pottery traditions.

Tin-glazed earthenware—known as faïence in France—has been produced in the town of Quimper since the late seventeenth century, with the region becoming especially renowned for its hand-painted Breton figures and vibrant floral decoration. By the nineteenth century, Quimper faïence was widely collected, and that tradition continued well into the twentieth century through makers such as Henriot Quimper.

This charming flat cup and saucer set features a traditional Breton figure dressed in regional attire, surrounded by stylized floral motifs in rich tones of blue, orange, and green. The cup is distinguished by its unusual, squared handle, while the saucer is centered with a single floral motif, creating a balanced and decorative presentation. Both pieces are finished with classic yellow and blue banding over a bright white glaze—an enduring hallmark of Quimper design.

✨ Decorating Appeal

Equally suited for display or use, this Quimper cup and saucer add a touch of French country charm to shelves, hutches, or breakfast tables. Its cheerful palette and traditional Breton imagery pair beautifully with farmhouse, provincial, and European-inspired interiors.

The underside is marked HENRIOT QUIMPER, with entièrement décoré à main (entirely hand-decorated) below. Painted form and décor numbers “F 351” and “D 118,” along with artist initials “PG,” date the set to circa 1968–1983, during the Henriot production period.

The cup measures 4" wide, 5 ¼″ wide with handle, and is 2 ½″ high. The diameter of the saucer is 6 ½″. Both pieces are in excellent condition.

Historical Note

Tin-glazed earthenware—known as faïence in France—has been produced in Quimper, Brittany since the late 17th century, when potter Jean-Baptiste Bousquet established one of the region’s first workshops around 1690. By the 19th century, Quimper had become renowned for its hand-painted ceramics.

Over time, several manufacturers shaped the tradition, including HB (Hubaudière-Bousquet) and Henriot. In 1968, these two historic makers were brought together under a single organization, uniting their molds, designs, and decorative styles. Today, Quimper faïence continues to be produced with the same hand-painted craftsmanship.
