Tin-glazed earthenware—known as faïence in France—was extremely popular during the nineteenth century, with some of the finest examples produced in the town of Quimper (pronounced kem-pair). Faïence production in Quimper dates back to the late seventeenth century, and the region remains synonymous with hand-painted Breton figures and vibrant folk-inspired decoration.
This HB Quimper flat cup in striking soleil yellow was produced by HB Quimper (Hubaudière-Bousquet), the earliest and one of the most influential Quimper pottery firms. The company traces its origins to 1685, when Jean-Baptiste Bousquet established the workshop that would shape Quimper faïence for generations.
The flat cup features a hand-painted male Breton peasant surrounded by floral motifs shaped as hearts, rendered in rich, saturated colors against a warm yellow glaze. The form is both decorative and substantial, with a broad bowl and classic handle.
The base is marked HB / QUIMPER / FRANCE / C. X. / 303, dating the piece to circa 1940–1960. The number 303 identifies the décor pattern, while “C” designates the head of the studio and “X” the individual painter—marks that provide valuable insight into HB’s mid-century production practices.
This piece shows age-appropriate wear and has a visible rim chip, which has been fully documented in the photographs. It remains a highly displayable example of mid-century HB Quimper faïence and an appealing study piece for collectors.
