Original first-edition copy of the HANDBOOK OF COMPOSITION Compendium of Rules Regarding Good English, Grammar, Sentence Structure, Paragraphing, Manuscript Arrangement, Punctuation, Spelling, Essay Writing, and Letter Writing, by Edwin C. Woolley ©1907 and published by D.C. Heath & Company.

The HANDBOOK OF COMPOSITION provides a comprehensive reference for students of composition, offering clear guidance on composition rules that are commonly misapplied.

This 1908 edition of the Handbook of Composition is in good condition and features indications of prior possession, e.g. a minor water stain on the paste down and end paper, as well as on the subsequent page near the bottom hinge. The deep red cover fabric is wrinkled, there is no dust jacket and the upper and lower spines exhibit minor wear. Regardless, the binding is secure, the pages slightly discolored, and no highlights or inscriptions are present..

Inscribed in beautiful script inside is Ellen Kilbour's name beside that of Oxford College, Oxford, Ohio. Established in 1852, Oxford College (Oxford Female Institute) was absorbed into Miami University in the late 1920s. It was the alma mater of Caroline Scott Harrison, the daughter of its first president and later, First Lady of the United States following the election of Benjamin Harrison in 1888.
