This lovely white ironstone ‘jelly’ mould (British spelling) or mold would be a welcome piece to anyone’s collection or added to a fun design element to a vintage or antique display.
Ironstone molds grew in popularity in the United States during the late 19th century, coinciding with the introduction of ironstone white china dinner sets and table wares. These molds were a more cost-effective option compared to the traditional, expensive molds made from copper or pewter. Cooks utilized them in various recipes for potted meat, pate, and aspic, often using gelatin from animal sources as a binding agent.
The 4 ¼” by 5 ½” OVAL MOLD measures 4” high. The design of the inner mold is a geo-metric shape in the style of a GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, while the outside of the mold is smooth. The glaze is in beautiful condition with no visible crazing and a shiny creamy white finish. The mold has no cracks or chips but there are a few dark dots inside that could be attributed to pitting or glaze issues.
