This lovely white ironstone ‘jelly’ mould (British spelling) or mold would be a welcome piece to anyone’s collection or added to a fun design element to a vintage or antique display.
The 7" by 5 ¼” OVAL MOLD measures 4” high. The design of the inner mold is a geo-metric shape in the style of a GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, while the outside of the mold is smooth. The bottom of the mold is slightly inverted in the center.
The mold is in good condition. It has no cracks or chips but does have some very light browning and crazing, handful of brown specks on the rim as well as kiln marks on the bottom--only adding to the character of the piece.
Ironstone molds gained popularity in the late 19th century for their affordability compared to copper or pewter molds. They were used by cooks for a variety of recipes, with animal-based gelatin being a common binding agent. Pectin was also used for making jams and jellies from ripe fruits.
