Mid-century Good Housekeeping recipe series with collectible numbered editions and vibrant 1950s food photography.

Collector’s Note

Good Housekeeping cookbooks from the mid-20th century are widely collected for their reliable recipes, colorful food photography, and approachable presentation of international cuisine. Editions from the 1950s reflect a growing American curiosity about global cooking during the post-war travel and cultural exchange boom.

In 1958, Good Housekeeping released a series of twenty staple-bound recipe booklets, each devoted to a specific culinary theme and sold through grocery stores and magazine stands.

Designed with bold typography, glossy four-color covers, and approachable test-kitchen recipes, these booklets became staples of the American home kitchen. Booklets featured the issue number (top right corner), “A Recommended Good Housekeeping Book” seal, and bright, mid-century illustrations and food photography.

Offered here are three titles from the original series, each sold individually.

  • #2 Book of Cookies — “to gladden the hearts of cookie lovers”
A classic collection of cookie recipes, with a warm kitchen scene featuring freshly baked cookies arranged across rustic wooden boards. Wraparound cover design.
  • #7 Party Pie Book — “plain and fancy—handsome and luscious”
A celebration of pies for entertaining, featuring a golden apple pie with cheddar and richly styled mid-century tableware.
  • #19 Around the World Cook Book — “specialty recipes with a foreign flavor”
A globally inspired collection reflecting the 1950s fascination with international cuisine, illustrated with bold, dramatic food styling and plated presentation.

Framing Appeal

These covers are standout examples of mid-century food styling and graphic design. With their bold typography, saturated color photography, and carefully staged kitchen scenes, they display beautifully in a vintage or retro-inspired kitchen. The series works especially well as a grouping—framed together or displayed on open shelving for a cohesive mid-century aesthetic.

Condition: All three booklets are in very good vintage condition overall, with light wear consistent with age. The Book of Cookies has a split detached cover but is complete, with clean, crisp interior pages; the separation is limited to the binding edge and could be stabilized if desired. No writing or major damage noted.
