1934 Student Piano Solo with Whimsical Clown Cover Art

Collector’s Note

Early student piano pieces with graphic covers are increasingly collected as nursery and playroom décor. The circus theme and bold 1930s color palette make this especially suitable for a child’s room or whimsical gallery wall

Published in 1934 by The Willis Music Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, Funny Clowns is a charming beginner-level piano solo composed by Bob Fields.

The playful cover illustration features two dancing clowns in star-studded costumes with a small performing dog — rendered in bold purple and warm yellow tones that capture the lighthearted spirit of early 20th-century children’s music.

Willis Music, founded in 1899 by Charles H. Willis, became widely respected for its educational piano repertoire. By the 1930s, the company was emerging as a leader in structured piano instruction — soon to publish John Thompson’s Modern Course for the Piano in 1936, which remains one of the most influential teaching methods in music education. This piece reflects that tradition: short, accessible, and designed for young pianists.

Good vintage condition. Pages are detached at the fold and there are handwritten instructional notes inside, consistent with student use. The piece is 9" by 12" and comes in a protective sleeve.

Framing Appeal

Cover display-worthy and visually appealing making it a fun piece of wall art in a child's bedroom or nursery.

Why Collect Vintage Sheet Music

Collecting old sheet music invites you into a world where history, art, and melody intertwine. Each piece is more than printed notation—it's a preserved moment in time. For music lovers, history buffs, and creative minds alike, building a collection offers both personal satisfaction and the possibility of uncovering items of real value.

From classical masterpieces to the spirited energy of the Jazz Age, vintage sheet music reflects how music shaped culture across generations. First editions of composers like Chopin or Gershwin are especially coveted, treasured for their historical and monetary worth. As Smithsonian Magazine notes, these artifacts provide a vivid window into America’s musical and cultural evolution.

Collectors often cherish sheet music not only for its sound but for its striking cover art. Displayed as décor, it brings warmth and character to any room. Others breathe new life into old pages through creative projects—turning them into artwork, journals, or crafts that merge nostalgia with personal style.
