1972 Yankee Magazine Herb Gardening & Homesteading Guide with Rustic New England Charm

Part of the beloved Forgotten Arts series from Yankee Magazine, this 1972 volume of The Forgotten Art of Growing, Gardening and Cooking with Herbs explores the traditional practices of growing, harvesting, and cooking with herbs—capturing the spirit of the back-to-the-land movement and New England self-sufficiency.

Written by Richard M. Bacon, the book blends practical instruction rooted in lived experience. Inside, readers will find guidance on cultivating herbs, drying and preserving them, using them in home decoration, and incorporating them into everyday cooking. Simple recipes and traditional techniques are woven throughout.

The cover features a striking black-and-white interior scene of a rustic New England room—herbs hanging from ceiling beams above a hearth—framed by a rich green border. It’s an image that perfectly reflects the book’s focus on domestic tradition, seasonal living, and handmade beauty.

Author Biography

Richard M. Bacon was an American writer, editor, and educator best known for his work with Yankee Magazine in the 1970s, where he authored and compiled the popular Forgotten Arts series. A graduate of Williams College, he also studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before pursuing careers in journalism, teaching, and writing. Living with his family on a small New Hampshire farm, Bacon embraced a largely self-reliant lifestyle—raising animals and practicing traditional skills that informed his work.

Good condition with visible shelf wear and browning to the cover, particularly along the spine. Interior pages are clean with no writing, marks, or creases. Binding remains solid and intact.
