Vintage The Etude Music Magazine — Frameable WWII & Post-War Covers

Collector’s Note

Highly desirable to collectors of music history and 20th-century ephemera, The Etude Music Magazine shaped how piano was taught in American homes and conservatories. Wartime editions documented patriotic efforts and morale-building initiatives, while postwar issues reflected renewed interest in recital performance, classical masters, and the growing American piano market.

The Etude Music Magazine functioned for over seven decades as one of the most influential pedagogical journals in American music education. Published by Theodore Presser Company, it served as a national forum for professional piano teachers, conservatory instructors, and advanced students.

Beyond instructional repertoire, its pages documented evolving performance practice, European master traditions (including Leschetizky methodology), and the role of music within wartime and postwar American society. These 1940s issues reflect a moment when music education intersected directly with patriotism, reconstruction, and the expanding middle-class piano market.

August 1942 (Vol. 6, No. 02)

A vibrant floral cover encircled by flowing musical notation, anchored by the lower-left “BUY WAR BONDS AND STAMPS FOR VICTORY” emblem — firmly placing this issue in the heart of World War II America. Inside includes article, “Enlisting Music for Men in Service.” Back advertisement for Nelson Doubleday 3-volume music library.

Condition: Very good vintage condition. Bright colors, minimal bumped edges and curling. [$18.00]

May 1947 (Vol. 65, No. 05)

Cover art by Eva Hoffman (signed lower right). The composition captures a solitary recitalist at a grand piano, illuminated by a concentrated pool of stage light. Dramatic red curtains and towering architectural forms create an atmosphere of intimacy within grandeur. The reverse features a colorful Wurlitzer advertisement — a striking example of postwar piano marketing and interior styling.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Mailing label on front, minimal bumped edges and light curling. [$16.00]

November 1948 (Vol. 66, No. 11)

Cover portrait of Joseph Haydn, one of the foundational composers of the Classical era. Inside features master lesson material including discussion of Johann Sebastian Bach and technical instruction articles. Rear advertising includes a black-and-white promotion for the Baldwin Electronic Organ.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Mailing label on front, visible browning, minor perforations, minimal bumped edges and curling. [$10.00]

Framing Appeal

At 13 ¼" by 10 ½", these covers frame beautifully in standard mats with a 16" by 20" frame. The 1942 floral design works wonderfully in a studio or music room, the 1947 recital scene pairs well with grand piano décor, and the 1948 Haydn portrait suits classical interiors or conservatory settings. Each offers strong graphic impact and period authenticity.

Just a quick heads‑up: the photos reveal details far better than text alone, so they’re worth a close review.
