Offered here is a matched pair of original embossed Victorian art tiles produced by the U.S. Encaustic Tile Works of Indianapolis, one of America’s premier tile manufacturers of the late 19th century. These richly glazed relief tiles feature naturalistic cherry fruit and blossoming branch motifs, executed in a warm olive-brown glaze that emphasizes the depth of the modeling.

Each tile measures approximately 6" square and was originally part of a fireplace surround set, a hallmark of Victorian interior design where decorative art tiles elevated both domestic and architectural spaces. The striated mold lines are visible on the back, typical of U.S. Encaustic backs from this production period. The company's markings, “ENCAUSTIC TILE WORKS / INDIANAPOLIS” are embossed across the ribs. (See digitally enhanced images for clearer images of back).

Very good condition for salvaged art tiles. Tile fronts demonstrate excellent glaze preservation, strong relief, and minor expected wear. The backs show mortar and residue consistent with removal from their original fireplace setting. No cracks but the sides of the tile with "branches and leaves" are chipped from the salvage process. The chips do not show from the front of the tile.

Significance for Collectors

  • Authentic examples of American Aesthetic Movement tile work.
  • Highly desirable fireplace surround tiles that stand alone beautifully or can be reunited with larger installations.
  • Representative of U.S. Encaustic Tile Works’ botanical and naturalistic designs, which remain favorites among collectors, designers, and historians alike.

About U.S. Encaustic Tile Works (Indianapolis, 1877–1930s)

Founded in 1877, the U.S. Encaustic Tile Works quickly rose to prominence as one of the most significant tile manufacturers in America. Despite the name, their early production was not limited to true “encaustic” inlaid tile, but expanded into a wide range of glazed relief tiles, floor tiles, and fireplace panels. By the 1880s, the company was producing tiles that rivaled the best from England and Europe, contributing to the decorative arts boom of the Gilded Age.

The factory in Indianapolis became a cornerstone of American tile history, known for high-quality clays, crisp mold work, and a wide variety of glazes. Tiles like these embossed botanical designs exemplify the firm’s artistic ambition and craftsmanship.
