Early J & G Meakin ironstone pieces bearing the lion couchant mark are especially desirable, as they predate the company’s later standardized production of the 1890s and beyond. Forms from the 1870s–1880s tend to be simpler, more sculptural, and less ornamented—qualities increasingly appreciated by collectors today. Examples that can be identified as both teapots and chocolate pots are particularly sought after for their versatility and distinctive silhouette.

Historical Note

J & G Meakin was one of Staffordshire’s leading 19th-century pottery firms, founded in 1851 by brothers James and George Meakin, sons of master potter James Meakin of Hanley, England. The Meakin family’s influence extended well beyond their own factory, with descendants and relatives going on to establish other major Staffordshire potteries, including Johnson Brothers. 

Early Meakin wares from the mid-to-late 19th century often emphasized simple, functional forms, reflecting the growing demand for practical yet refined tablewares. By the 1890s, production shifted toward more standardized patterns, making earlier pieces such as this notable for their clean lines and transitional design sensibility.
