A Refined Early J & G Meakin Staffordshire Piece with Early Lion Couchant Mark | Pre-1890

Collector’s Note

Early J & G Meakin ironstone pieces bearing the lion couchant mark are especially desirable, as they predate the company’s later standardized production of the 1890s and beyond. Forms from the 1870s–1880s tend to be simpler, more sculptural, and less ornamented—qualities increasingly appreciated by collectors today. Examples that can be identified as both teapots and chocolate pots are particularly sought after for their versatility and distinctive silhouette.

Beautiful early white ironstone teapot or chocolate pot by J & G Meakin of Staffordshire, England, dating to the late 19th century.

This piece features a notably clean, unembellished form, with softly rounded sides, a gently tapering body, and a simple domed lid with ring finial. Unlike later decorative patterns, this earlier example reflects a more restrained aesthetic—highlighting proportion, balance, and utility over ornament.

The underside bears an early J & G Meakin mark featuring the Royal Arms with a lion couchant (lion lying down with head raised), dating the piece to pre-1890, before the firm adopted later marks incorporating the lion rampant and factory location details.

Decorating Appeal

This piece stands out for its quiet elegance—its smooth curves and lack of decoration allow it to function almost as a sculptural object. It layers beautifully with both traditional ironstone collections and more minimal, modern interiors.

A beautifully proportioned and highly displayable example of early Staffordshire ironstone, equally suited for collectors or refined table and shelf styling

Forms such as this appear in period references, including examples documented in Second Look at White Ironstone by Jean Wetherbee, where similar shapes are attributed to Meakin production of the 1870s–1880s.

Dimensions: 9 ¾” H (with the lid) 8" H (without the lid), 8 ¾” (handle to spout)

Historical Note

J & G Meakin was one of Staffordshire’s leading 19th-century pottery firms, founded in 1851 by brothers James and George Meakin, sons of master potter James Meakin of Hanley, England. The Meakin family’s influence extended well beyond their own factory, with descendants and relatives going on to establish other major Staffordshire potteries, including Johnson Brothers.

Early Meakin wares from the mid-to-late 19th century often emphasized simple, functional forms, reflecting the growing demand for practical yet refined tablewares. By the 1890s, production shifted toward more standardized patterns, making earlier pieces such as this notable for their clean lines and transitional design sensibility.
