A charming 1972 Ohio Department of Agriculture booklet celebrating honey recipes and the importance of pollinators.

Collector’s Note

Government agricultural pamphlets from the mid-20th century are a fascinating category of culinary and educational ephemera. Publications promoting regional foods such as honey highlight both everyday cooking traditions and the agricultural industries that supported them. Booklets like this one are especially appealing to collectors interested in beekeeping history, gardening, and vintage recipe literature.

Drops of Gold: Ohio Honey is a 24-page recipe and educational booklet published in 1972 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Ohio State Beekeepers’ Association. Issued during the administration of Ohio Governor John J. Gilligan, the pamphlet was part of an effort to promote honey consumption while educating the public about the importance of honeybees to agriculture.

Inside the booklet are over 100 recipes highlighting honey as a natural sweetener, including Cinnamon Honey, Honey Chutney, Honey Chocolate Cake, Honey Caramels, Honey Baked Beans and Honey Barbecue Chicken.

Beyond recipes, the pamphlet also includes informational sections on beekeeping and pollination, making its appeal not only to recipe collectors but also to gardeners and beekeeping enthusiasts. Footer pages throughout the booklet contain facts about bees and pollination, and the back cover presents a particularly interesting chart listing crops in the United States that depend on insect pollination or show increased yields from bee activity.

The 8 ¼" × 5 ¼" pamphlet is in very good vintage condition with light age toning and no tears. It appears to have been carefully preserved and shows little evidence of use.

Agricultural Note

Honeybees play a critical role in agriculture as pollinators of fruit, vegetable, and seed crops. Mid-20th-century publications such as this one were often produced by state agricultural departments to encourage honey consumption while also educating the public about the importance of beekeeping. The pollination data included in this booklet reflects the growing awareness during the 1960s and 1970s that honeybee populations were essential to American food production.

Just a quick heads‑up: the photos reveal details far better than text alone, so they’re worth a close review.
