Dayton: A History in Photographs is a richly illustrated pictorial history of Dayton, Ohio, compiled and published by the Junior League of Dayton as part of the nation's Bicentennial celebration.
First released in 1976 and represented here by the Second Edition (1982), the volume brings together hundreds of historic photographs documenting the people, architecture, businesses, industries, and neighborhoods that shaped Dayton's development. Community members contributed photographs and documents from private collections, creating a visual archive that might otherwise have been lost.
Among the highlights are rare nineteenth-century photographs, including examples of early daguerreotype photography by Dayton photographer John Dolley, as well as images documenting the city's transformation during the Industrial Revolution, aviation era, and twentieth century.
Historical captions and essays accompany the photographs, tracing Dayton's story from its founding through the modern era. The cover features an 1876 view of the Montgomery County Courthouse, one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the Midwest.
