Small screw base / C6-type Christmas light bulb

A wonderfully unusual piece of early Christmas lighting, this vintage Japanese figural Christmas light bulb is molded in the shape of an ear of corn partially wrapped in its husk. Individual raised kernels form the center of the cob, while deeply molded ribs give the surrounding husk remarkably realistic dimension.

The bulb is made of pale yellow-to-cream glass with softly colored details, including traces of green along the husk and a red-painted tip. Measuring approximately 4 ½ inches long, it is substantially larger and more sculptural than many small figural Christmas bulbs.

Its metal screw base is stamped “14V JAPAN,” documenting both its original voltage and Japanese manufacture. Comparable 14V Japanese figural bulbs are associated with C6-type Christmas light strings.

With its unusual harvest motif, dimensional molding and mellow aged coloration, this is an especially charming example for a collection of vintage Christmas lighting, Japanese figural bulbs, antique holiday decorations, or early electric Christmas memorabilia.

Highlights:

  • Vintage Japanese figural Christmas tree light bulb
  • Whimsical ear of corn in husk design
  • Molded glass construction with deeply dimensional detail
  • Raised individual corn kernels across the center
  • Ribbed, realistically modeled outer corn husk
  • Pale yellow/cream glass with subtle green coloration along portions of the husk
  • Red-painted tip with age-related paint loss
  • Approximately 4½" long, including screw base
  • Metal screw base clearly stamped “14V JAPAN”
  • Unusual early-style Christmas collectible ideal for display with vintage holiday lighting and ornament

Collector’s Note

Figural bulbs brought novelty and personality to early electric Christmas displays, transforming individual lights into miniature decorative objects. Japanese makers produced a remarkable variety of molded forms, including Santas, animals, lanterns, flowers and other whimsical subjects. This large corn-in-husk form is particularly appealing for its unusual subject and highly dimensional molding. The original “14V JAPAN” stamping on the metal base provides an important surviving clue to its manufacture and original use.

Good vintage condition with age-related surface and paint wear. The molded glass retains excellent definition, including crisp individual corn kernels and ribbed husk detail. The red-painted tip shows noticeable paint loss, with additional scattered color loss and wear elsewhere. The metal screw base has oxidation and age-related discoloration. No chips or cracks observed.

Note: This vintage 14V bulb being offered as a collectible display piece. It is has not been tested and is not recommended for electrical use.

Display Appeal

Beyond its original use as a Christmas light, the corn bulb makes a wonderful small display object. Its softly aged yellow, green and red coloring has an almost folk-art quality, while the exaggerated kernels and deeply molded husk give it considerable presence for its size. Display it with vintage Christmas ornaments and light bulbs, in a holiday curio collection, or as part of an Americana-inspired harvest display.
